Struthof, nestled in the Alsatian Vosges Mountains, was the only Nazi concentration camp established on French soil during World War II. Opened in 1941 under the name KL-Natzweiler-Struthof, it housed thousands of deportees from all over Europe. Subjected to inhumane conditions, these prisoners endured forced labor, starvation, and daily violence. Some were even victims of medical experiments, testifying to the cruelty of the Nazi regime. For many, it was a place of suffering from which few returned unscathed, and the memory of which remains etched in the collective memory.
Today, Struthof is a place of remembrance and contemplation, where the museum tells the tragic story of the internees and preserves their testimonies. It invites visitors to understand the horror of deportation and to become aware of the fragility of fundamental rights. Exhibitions and educational initiatives raise awareness among visitors, particularly younger generations, of the responsibility to defend our freedoms. Through this duty of remembrance, the Struthof reminds us that vigilance remains the best defense against all forms of hatred and intolerance.
